As the smartdevices patent war wages on, intellectual property continued to be a key weapon in the tech majors’ arsenal. There’s no surprise then that the United States Patent and Trademark Office saw a 13 percent increase in patents awarded in 2012. IFI CLAIMS, a patent analysis company from the United States who reported the 13 precent increase, also note that the 253,155 utility patents issued last year is the highest annual number to date.

The company reports that the top-50 ranking (see below) is almost completely companies working in electronics, computing and telecommunications. While polesitter IBM maintained the pole position for the 20th year consecutively, more interesting is where the smartdevice software and hardware manucaturers sit:

  • Google shoved it’s way into the top-50 with 1151 successful patents; a 170 percent increase on their 2011 number, moving them from 65 to 21 on the list.
  • Apple’s 68 percent increase brought their successful patents up to 1136 and their position up to 22 from 39.
  • Samsung held second spot.
  • Microsoft held their spot at number 6.
  • Nokia slipped off the top-50, down to 52.

With no end in sight for much of the patent litigation, there’s a good chance this trend will continue into 2013.

Google combines entertainment services into Google Play

Posted on 7 March 2012

WARNING Before reading this, please be aware that Google Music and movie rentals through Google Play are still country restricted, so if you’re not in the United States (and don’t know how to get around that) this may make you sad! Just a heads up!
Just hours ago Google launched Google Play, a combined user interface for your apps, books, movies and music, bringing together the content and purchase platforms that used to be the separate Android Market, Google Music and the Google Books eBookstore services (you’ll notice that market.android.com, music.google.com and books.google.com/ebooks all now redirect to their respective areas of Google Play). They’ve also launched the Google Play Store Android app as well as Play apps to use your booksmovies and music.

Most of Play’s features are really just an amalgamation of pre-existing features, but it’s biggest selling point is that is makes all this content available in the cloud so you can use your content across all your devices without having to buy the same thing numerous times (like you do with iPhones and iPads!).

It’s getting clouded – space in the cloud environment

Posted on 24 February 2012

Just now I was writing about something else entirely on this blog when the GIZMODO extension I used with Chrome popped up with the headline, “Get 50GB Free Storage for Android.” Eyebrow raised, I impulsive clicked the link and followed the article’s instructions to get Box‘s Android app “right now” to get 50GB of cloud storage for free forever. True to their word, I got my 50GB free. While this is a pretty sweet deal—and I do encourage any fellow Android user to take them up on their 30-day offer—as the app downloaded and I registered for another cyber locker service, I began to think, ‘Do I actually need this space? What will I use it for?’ I asked myself this because I have so many cloud locker…
