☆ the tragedy of ideology: blame it of fidel

laura, john and i saw the first film on my french film fest wish list: la faute à fidel (blame it on fidel) and it was fabulous. this is no ordinary coming-of-age film. this is the transition story of nine-year-old anna de la mesa (played by nina kervel-bey) who’s life changes forever when her parents begin an ideological sea-change. her Spanish-born lawyer father fernando (stefano accorsi) isinspired by his family’s opposition to Franco (you later learn he is from a rich catholic royalist family and that his uncle is fighting in spain) and allende’s victory in chile, to quit his job and become a liaison in France for chilean activists. her mother, a marie clare journalist turned writer documenting the stories of women’s abortion…

☆ 2046: reflections

i was watching showtime this afternoon and 2046 was on. i forgot how good it is. the colouring is divine. lavish reds on futuristic trains and aquarium lighting of the hotel room where they make love to name a few examples. i also noticed the link between the two story lines much more intricately this time. one is an alter-egoistic, alternate-reality future world spawned of his pulp writing. the cliche futurism is a plasticky thin membrane disguising the protagonist’s yearnings. rather than looking forward to his future, he utilises his ‘fiction’ writing to dwell on his past. that said, neither story seems to be fully developed. it’s like wong kar wai had two story lines that he had started writing but never finished, but…

☆ little miss sunshine: reflections

in a comment on to notes on a scandal post, grace stirs it up by asking, “Could you say that Steve Carell’s character in Little Miss Sunshine breaks the mold? Of course he’s a lonely, angsty bloke, but it’s never as a direct result of his queerdom, and his sexuality is never really touched on. His lover’s left him for someone else, he’s tried to kill himself… but the character of the lover would have been equally effective regardless of which genitals he possessed.” and this made me think that mynon-fandom of its unrealisticness made me miss an important aspect of the film that to-date, i haven’t seen written about: how normal the gay character was. read the little miss sunshine post read grace’s…
