Better late than never Google

Google’s website for the 2007 Federal Election was one of the many sites I relied on heavily in the lead up to that election. That world-first service included an election mapplet—with the electorates marked out and information including the incumbent member, the candidates contesting that election, the margin, links Google News, YouTube, the ABC and other services, and a history of the seat—for Google Maps, links to the party’s YouTube channels and Google’s Australia Votes channel and a string of iGoogle gadgets. Such a service from Google was sadly lacking from this election. Until this morning of course when Google launched their 2010 Federal Election landing page. election day 15 :: more green to keep rudd clean

rudd announced in far north queensland today a $200 million environmental plan designed to protect the great barrier reef which as we all know is dying because of climate change. rudd’s plan targets sediment and nutrient run-off from farming in the area. now, don’t get me wrong, i am very pro environmental politics. plus one day i want people to be able to take their children to the reef (not me thought, i’m not having children…scary), so i understand the sentiment. but really? surely there is more to this election than the environment. as the election goes on it seems that labor is getting almost as green as the greens and the coalition are green with envy… not sure what’s going on? read my…

mark vaile, leader of the nationals, is demanding disclosure by labor of the details of their prefrence deal with the greens. seems like can’t-stand-others-having-secrets attitude to me. they’ll announce it when they want. but i do take his point that “…Rudd should now come clean on any policy changes he has promised to the Greens.” steve fielding wasn’t as nice about it. i really wish that the general voting population had a clearer idea of what these types of preference deals actually mean. it can get quite complicated. not sure what’s going on? read my election speil
