(RE)MIXED RESPONSES John Mayer plays Video Games

Posted on April 8th, 2012

Well who knows, maybe John Mayer does play video games? But the bluesy popster has recorded  two melancholic guitar covers of Lana Del Rey‘s ‘Video Games.’ ‘Sounds from Thursday afternoon’ is more true to Mayer’s sound (and Del Rey and Justin Parker’s original composition for that matter). It is ‘Sounds from Thursday evening’, a more watery bluesy guitar version, that meanders off in some other direction around the 2 minute mark. But both tracks are totally worth a listen.

(Re)mixed responses - exploring il/legitimate appropriation from remix to sampling to blatant rip-off

Good on Gotye! Yesterday his track ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ which he did with Kimbra came in as number one in yesterday’s Hottest 100 count down on Triple J. While I’d heard this cover before, it’s timely to post about it. Canadian band Walk Off the Earth used just one guitar between all the band members to record an very cute cover of the track ^_^

(Re)mixed responses – 360 covers Regurgitator

(Re)mixed responses - exploring il/legitimate appropriation from remix to sampling to blatant rip-off Melbourne-based rapper 360 reinterpreted Regurgitator‘s “! (The Song Formerly Known As)” as part of Triple J‘s Like a Version and this year’s Ausmusic Month. While I wouldn’t so much call it a cover, since it only adopts the original song’s chorus, it’s still worth a listen. It’s part of my cherry-picked tracks for Ausmusic Month. Haven’t sampled enough?
